Book review: The Animal Cell (Think-A-Lot-Tots series)

The Animal Cell is one book from the Think-A-Lot-Tots collection of educational children’s science books written by Dr. Thomai Dion.  It introduces children to the basic concept of an animal cell and it’s components. It is a great resource for parents interested in exposing their children to basic science vocabulary at an early age.

[Thomai Dion reflects on her project here.]

What is a cell? What is inside a cell? What is an endoplasmic reticulum? Dr. Thomai Dion related the rooms inside a house to cellular compartments.  Reading science should not be a daunting and difficult task. It should be easy, fun and engaging and allows your children to ask questions.

I would highly recommend this book to parents or early grade teachers who want to expose their children to science. My toddler was very curious on what a lipid bilayer is and repeated “endoplasmic reticulum” and “nucleolus” after me.  He was very excited to say, “Go, Cell, Go!”  If toddlers do not understand everything in the book, it is important for them to be familiar with the word ‘cell’, at the very least.

Thank you Dr. Thomai Dion for nurturing children’s curiosity and spreading the importance of science learning!
